Have you ever thought what would happen if same-sex marriages were legalized in Turkey? Probably, there would be a big chaos resulting from this. Homosexuality means feeling admiration for a person of the same gender. “First, we are all human beings. That is to say, there is no such phenomenon as ‘a homosexual’” (Stott, 1998). These people are not allowed to marry in most countries, including Turkey. Some Turks think that the ban on the legalization of the marriage of these couples should be lifted. However; others who give a lot of importance to their moral values think that this ban is necessary in order to avoid social dislocation. Thus, these couples should not be allowed to marry in terms of society benefit and the religion.
The opponents of the same sex marriage say that marriage is a holy ceremony and the core of society. “Marriage is a union between one man and one woman, designed of God to last so long as they both shall live” (The Westminster Confession of Faith.) The legalization of the same-sex marriages would destroy this understanding. Firstly, a person who gets married to a person of the same sex cannot give a birth. All countries need women to give birth to maintain its cultural and moral values. Ann, it is impossible in same-sex marriages. Secondly, since the earliest times, the marriage term has become integrated with a husband and a wife. Therefore, it is too hard to break this. Picturing that marriage term turns out to include two husbands or two wives would be jarring. Thirdly, if the couples were allowed to marry, they would probably want to adopt a child and it would cause a disaster of epic proportions. Children raised by these parents would have a lot of problems. For example, in the primary school a child can be easily isolated because s/he has a different family. A child needs a father and a mother in his every stage of growing up. A child raised by same-sex parents is not different from a child without any family since a family means a union including a mother and a father. And, the child needs this.
The second point which the opponents take into consideration is the religion. For example, in The Bible, God condemns the people having romantic attraction to a same-sex person. God defines the homosexuality as an unnatural and shameful thing. “First Corinthians 6:9 states that homosexuals are unrighteous and will not inherit the kingdom of God. Since both homosexual desires and actions are condemned in the Bible, it is clear that homosexuals “marrying” are not God’s will, and would be, in fact, sinful” (Got Questions Ministries,2002-2011). And, such is the case for Muslims. In Quran, there are a lot of verses against the homosexuality. Hence, Turks think allowing same-sex couples to marry destroys their religious values. In Quran, there is a story about homosexuality and most of the Turkish people knowing the story are the opponent to the same-sex marriage. In the story, there is a tribe and its leader is a homosexual guy. God sends Lot to warn them yet, they ignore him and God destroys the whole tribe (Sloan) It is easily understood from the story that God damns homosexuality.
There is a group of people who support the same-sex marriages. They say the gay couples, who claim legalization of their will, have a right to marry whom they want. “Denying one group the right to marry has many adverse emotional and financial consequences. Examples are social security medical leave, and other benefits; property inheritance; the right to visit their spouse in hospital, and make medical decisions if they are incapacitated; security of the couple and of their children” (Robinson,2011).However; they are partially wrong because there would be a wild disorder in education of child if the same-sex marriage were legalized. The teachers would have to teach children in kindergartens, primary or secondary schools that same-sex marriage is equal to the opposite-sex marriages and it would cause a lot of problems. For example, the parents of children would go against the idea and they would probably think that this idea violates their beliefs (Robinson, 2011).
Consequently, it seems impossible to legalize the same-sex marriages. In my opinion, homosexuality arises just from the fact that people do not put enough faith in God. If you claim that you are a homosexual person and you want to marry and start a family, you have to find another solution. “Marriage is not an arbitrary construct; it is an ‘honorable estate’ based on the different, complementary nature of men and women — and how they refine, support, encourage and complete one another” (Bennett, 1996).
